VRF/VRV Multi-Zone Systems

Variable refrigerant flow — individual zone control across an entire building from a single outdoor unit. The standard specification for hotels, multi-storey offices, and large retail facilities in Namibia.

High Demand

Traditional HVAC vs VRF/VRV Systems

Traditional split systems

  • Separate outdoor unit required per indoor unit — roof covered in equipment
  • On/off compressor cycling wastes 40–60% of electricity per cycle
  • All zones cool to the same temperature — no individual occupant control
  • Cannot heat one zone while simultaneously cooling another

VRF/VRV multi-zone

  • One outdoor unit serves up to 64 indoor units across all floors
  • Inverter-driven compressor adjusts continuously — 30–50% energy saving
  • Each zone has independent temperature and fan speed control
  • Simultaneous heating and cooling — south offices warm, north offices cool

VRF & VRV Questions Answered

VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) and VRV (Variable Refrigerant Volume) are the same technology. VRV is Daikin's trademarked term; VRF is the generic industry name used by Mitsubishi Electric, LG, and others. Both use a single outdoor unit to serve multiple indoor units across a building, varying the refrigerant flow to each zone independently. This allows simultaneous heating in some zones and cooling in others from one outdoor unit—the key advantage over traditional multi-split systems.
This depends on the outdoor unit's capacity. Compact VRF outdoor units serve 3–8 indoor units, while large commercial outdoor units serve up to 20–64 indoor units. Multiple outdoor units can be combined into a single refrigerant circuit for very large buildings, serving 100+ indoor units. The exact configuration is determined during the load calculation and design phase, where we calculate the cooling and heating demand for each zone and specify the outdoor unit capacity accordingly.
VRF systems typically achieve 30–50% electricity savings over equivalent buildings fitted with individual split systems. The savings come from inverter-driven compressors that modulate to meet exact demand; simultaneous heat recovery that uses waste heat from cooling zones to heat other zones; and centralised control for time-of-use optimisation. For a 50-room hotel or 5,000 m² office in Namibia, this translates to hundreds of thousands of Namibian dollars in annual electricity savings.
A typical hotel or office project takes 2–8 weeks depending on the number of indoor units, complexity of refrigerant pipework routing, and whether the building is occupied during installation. We phase the work where possible—typically completing one floor at a time to avoid disrupting operations. The process includes system design and load calculations, equipment procurement, pipework and indoor unit installation, outdoor unit commissioning, and final performance verification across all zones.
We are trained and certified installers for Daikin VRV (5 Series), Mitsubishi Electric City Multi (R2 and R3 Series), and LG Multi V (5 Series). All three brands have regional support networks for Namibia, with spare parts available within 3–7 business days from regional distributors. Daikin VRV is the most commonly specified brand for large commercial projects in Namibia due to established local parts availability. We provide full design, supply, installation, commissioning, and warranty on both equipment and labour.
